The 2024 offseason got off to a busy start for the Green Bay Packers, with trades and high-profile free agency signings. The Green Bay Packers signed running back Josh Jacobs and safety Xavier McKinney alone for roughly $100 million in the first few days of free agency. There are still a number of positions that require depth, despite their activities in free agency. Even with the signing of Xavier McKinney, a good player, there are still concerns about safety.
With the exception of McKinney, none of the safeties on the Green Bay Packers roster have played a significant number of defensive end snaps in the NFL. None of them have more than two seasons of experience. The final group of free agents are trying to sign as the NFL Draft approaches. Regretfully, the Packers will have to contend with their largest opponent outside of their division if they hope to sign one of the top safeties still available.
Target Free Agent: Green Bay Packers Julian Blackmon is planning to visit the 49ers in San Francisco.
The Indianapolis Colts selected young safety Julian Blackmon in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In his four-year career, the 25-year-old has participated in 50 games and amassed over 200 tackles, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles, and 7 interceptions. Any club searching for backfield support, including the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers who eliminated them from the 2023–24 season playoffs, is keeping an eye on the 6’0, 202-pound safety.
The head staff and supporters of the Green Bay Packers are not thrilled with the prospect of the 49ers signing a top free agent; the fact that the player is a free agent that the Packers are probably interested in is a “twist of the knife.”
Blackmon recorded a career-high four interceptions in 15 games in 2023, which tied for sixth highest in the league. Blackmon also recorded a career-high 88 tackles, 65 of which were single stops. His versatility on the field, where he played more than 100 snaps as the deep safety, box safety, and slot defender, contributed significantly to these results.
Blackmon’s youth is a wonderful fit for the Green Bay Packers’ scheme of things, and having him as Xavier McKinney’s backup safety would be ideal. Blackmon is one of the few players still in the lineup who can help the Green Bay Packers in the safety room. The Green Bay Packers would probably have to play the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs in order to go to the Super Bowl. Seeing a player they could have had make plays against them in the playoffs is the last thing the Green Bay Packers want to happen.
