On Monday, there was some unfavourable news for the Yankees. Star pitcher Gerrit Cole’s throwing elbow underwent an MRI, and New York is presently awaiting the results. When the team will find out if the 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner has a significant injury is unknown, but nothing is certain right now. Fortunately, reports indicate that the MRI is considered a precaution. This being the case, Yankees supporters will be holding their collective breath until the announcement of the results.
Following the release of Cole’s MRI results, there was much discussion about whether or not the team would try to sign two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell. The Yankees have linked Snell to the team on several occasions, and they even made him a contract offer this offseason. However, according to SNY’s Andy Martino, it doesn’t appear that New York will make another offer in light of the Cole news. “The Cole news has not reignited the Yankees’ one-time pursuit of free agent ace Blake Snell, per league sources,” Martino stated. After Snell rejected the Yankees’ offer in January, the team signed Marcus Stroman, and SNY revealed last month that the Yankees had withdrawn their offer to Snell. Nothing on that front had changed as of Monday afternoon.”Snell is among the best pitchers in baseball, but the Yankees would have to pay a huge price to acquire him.
He is seeking a contract that would bring in about $30 million a year, but because of the club’s already exorbitant salary, there would also be significant tax penalties. Cole should be alright and won’t be late. It doesn’t sound like Snell is coming to town, even if he does miss some time.
