From a financial standpoint, there has never been a better moment to be a Major League Baseball player. The Los Angeles Dodgers recently completed an offseason in which they spent more than $1 billion on just two players. Juan Soto, an outfielder for the New York Yankees, must be salivating with knowledge of that.
Following the conclusion of the 2024 season, Soto will become a free agent. He’s been sought for via trade twice in his career, commanding high asking fees. He will now have the freedom to assess his own value. Several organizations will be contacting him to inquire about their ability to pay for one of the top players in the game right now.
The Yankees will be one of those clubs, of course. For a very long time, they would love to retain Soto wearing Yankee pinstripes next to Aaron Judge. However, Soto is unlikely to accept any hometown benefits in exchange for staying in the Bronx. Like everyone else, the Yankees will most likely need to make the top offer.
We know from history that the Steinbrenner family is prepared to shell out enormous sums of money for players in the hopes of taking home titles. In terms of free agency, they won’t be any different this year. Rumor has it, though, that the family might be considering investing in a different sport besides baseball.
