The Kansas City Chiefs have won the Super Bowl twice in a row. They made history back in February when they emerged as the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the future Hall of Famer Tom Brady-led New England Patriots in 2003–04. They hope to join the ranks of only two NFL teams in history—the Green Bay Packers have won three consecutive titles—this year.
But for that to occur, the Chiefs will require a great deal of progress in a number of areas. One of the team’s top wide receivers as a rookie last year, Rashee Rice, will miss multiple games as a result of his suspension for his involvement in an automobile accident earlier in the offseason.
The Chiefs have significant issues on their offensive line in addition to wondering who else except Travis Kelce can be counted on in the passing game.
The Green Bay Packers won Andre Dillard from the Kansas City Chiefs.
The offensive line’s lacklustre performance from the previous season has left the Chiefs in need of some depth at offensive tackle. Despite winning the Super Bowl, the Chiefs still need to consider Patrick Mahomes’ long-term health and figure out how to best guard him.
The Tennessee Titans did not cut Andre Dillard, a former first-round choice, even though he had been performing poorly the previous few seasons. But Dillard went to see the Chiefs, who were willing to sign him for depth and maybe the hope that a change of environment would help him get better.
Dillard did, however, just sign a contract with the Packers. Following their opening game of the season, Green Bay lost five-time All-Pro David Bakhtiari due to yet another knee injury. The 2022 seventh-round selection, Rasheed Walker, assumed the left tackle position and performed admirably. Dillard might have thought he had a better chance of playing on the offensive line, but Green Bay has a number of offensive line concerns of their own.
Former left tackle David Bakhtiari of the Green Bay Packers may sign with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Bakhtiari was cut by the Packers following the season, which allowed them to free up over $21 million in salary cap space. The frequently injured left tackle became a free agent as a result, but he hasn’t signed with a team yet.
Since the Chiefs missed out on Dillard, Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports thinks they should consider signing Bakhtiari, a low-risk, high-reward player:
On the other hand, they could try out with former Green Bay Packers LT David Bakhtiari if they wanted to adopt a low-risk, high-reward approach. After rupturing his ACL late in the 2020 NFL season, he has only been able to participate in 13 games. In the event that he is healthy, he might be a good value.
It is impossible that Bakhtiari will land a big contract on the open market, given his history of injuries. He might be signed for the league minimum and offer the team excellent depth and leadership if he can pass a physical.
But the real concern is whether his knee will hold up. Will his health even allow him to sign a contract this offseason?
The Chiefs ought to be among the first teams to sign him if it happens.
