Brisbane’s Marburg weather radar closed until the end of the year…
Brisbane’s Marburg weather radar has been temporarily closed for upgrades and is expected to remain offline until late 2023. The Bureau of Meteorology is replacing the existing radar with a new dual-polarised Doppler radar, which will improve the accuracy of rainfall and wind condition monitoring. This technology will provide higher-resolution images, better visibility during severe weather events, and improved detection of rain and hail.
The radar upgrade is crucial for enhancing weather monitoring in southeast Queensland, particularly in regions prone to severe storms, such as Greater Brisbane, Toowoomba, and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. While the Marburg radar is offline, coverage will be maintained by Brisbane’s Mt Stapylton radar, along with a temporary radar at Brisbane Airport. The Bureau of Meteorology’s other observation tools, such as satellite imagery and automatic weather stations, will also continue to provide essential weather data .
