Forward Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs has been linked to the Detroit Red Wings in one trade proposal, according to trade rumors.
Marner’s $65.4 million, six-year contract is about to expire. Marner is in his last year of contract, and the Maple Leafs’ lack of playoff success has made him a sought-after trade target. A user on the website PuckPedia suggested a trade that would see the Red Wings acquire Marner in a blockbuster deal. PuckGM is a new tool that allows users to make their own trades.
Although it would be a blockbuster trade, there is some logic to the suggested deal for both sides. With Marner, Detroit would acquire a true superstar forward who can support the Red Wings’ youthful core as they attempt to qualify for the playoffs.
Toronto would receive Lucas Raymond, a 22-year-old who the Red Wings selected fourth overall in the 2020 draft. The Swede and Raymond haven’t been able to agree on a contract extension, hence the Swede is an RFA.
In addition to Raymond, Toronto would also acquire 24-year-old Jonatan Berggren, a marginal NHL player who may end up playing in the Maple Leafs’ bottom six. In contrast, William Wallinder was selected in the second round of the 2020 NHL draft.
