Starting pitcher Joe Ryan of the Minnesota Twins has been placed on the 15-day injured list because of a serious strain to his pitching shoulder muscle. The team is about to begin a vital homestand against two significant division rivals and postseason candidates, so this injury comes at a bad time.

Ryan has been identified as having a Grade 2 strain in the teres major, which is the muscle that extends from the upper arm to the shoulder blade. Ryan’s manager, Rocco Baldelli, stated that he will be out for “weeks to months,” although he did not rule out his comeback this season.

Ryan left his most recent start on Wednesday early due to pain and discomfort. This season, he has a 7-7 record, a 3.60 ERA, and 147 strikeouts in 135 innings.

It’s like a kick to the belly, Baldelli remarked. “It will require some time to heal, and he will make every effort to correct himself and return, but this may take some time.”

With less than seven weeks left in the regular season, Ryan intends to seek a second opinion before the team establishes a rehabilitation schedule.

Chris Paddack, the starting pitcher, has been sidelined for three weeks due to a strained forearm, and it is still unclear when he will return. Nevertheless, baseball’s president Derek Falvey

operations, mentioned that Paddack might soon start a throwing program with hopes of returning before the end of the season.

The Twins now depend on David Festa and Simeon Woods Richardson, two rookies, to back up Pablo López and Bailey Ober in the rotation because they decided against acquiring costly starting pitchers before to the trade deadline.

“You know you’re going to have to rely on your internal guys when you reach a deadline and things don’t work out the way you want,” Falvey stated. “We think a large portion of our internal group is capable of filling these roles and can contribute to our team in the final stages.”

To start the second game of the doubleheader against the Guardians, who came into the series with a 3½-game lead over the Twins in the division race, Louie Varland was called up from Triple-A St. Paul.
