BREAKING NEWS:Watch Members of Metallica Perform a Neil Diamond Classic at the Bands…
On Sunday, August 4, Metallica played a concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and its Boston-area fans had the best time ever. Throughout the performance, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo of Metallica amused themselves by playing a lighthearted cover of Neil Diamond’s beloved sing-along hit, “Sweet Caroline.”
About six songs into the show, Metallica played a version of “Screaming Suicide,” a song from their 2023 album 72 Seasons, before performing Diamond’s 1969 hit.
Frontman James Hetfield announced to the audience that Trujillo and Hammett were “gonna entertain you for a moment,” as shown in a fan-shot video. He continued, “Have fun.”
Then Trujillo declared, “Kirk and I prefer to have a jam at this point in the show. This song is incredibly heavy and frightening, so if you start moshing, careful not to hurt yourself. I’m shivering just thinking about how terrible this song is.
Trujillo proceeded to sing Diamond’s pop gem in a gruff voice, getting the audience to join in with him during the choruses. Hammett added some metal riffs to his generally faithful rendition of the tune. At the end of the performance, Trujillo declared, “Thank you very much! The heaviest song in the world!”
Hammett then threw out a riff from The Standells’ Boston-themed 1966 garage-rock classic “Dirty Water.”
Metallica had a little fun with their Boston-area fans at the band’s concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday, August 4.
Trujillo and Hammett regularly play bass-and-guitar “doodles” during Metallica concerts. These interludes sometimes feature the two musicians playing songs that have a connection to the local city or area where the band is playing that night.
Metallica began the current North American leg of its M72 World Tour with August 2 and 4 shows in Foxborough. The band’s next concert takes place August 9 at Soldier Field in Chicago. The trek is mapped out through a September 29 show in Mexico City.
Metallica also will be performing at the 2024 edition of its Helping Hands benefit concert and auction. The event, which raises money for the band’s All Within My Hands Foundation, is scheduled for December 13 at YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.
