The New Orleans Saints approached the 2024 NFL Draft with a workmanlike demeanour, allocating the majority of their selections to the unglamorous but vital positions in an effort to strengthen the foundation of a squad that struggled on both sides of the ball during the previous season.
While using more late picks to strengthen the trenches, the Saints selected tackle Taliese Fuaga out of Oregon State at number 14 overall, and corner Kool-Aid McKinstry of Alabama at number 41. However, the one risky big-name selection the team made caught everyone’s attention and has been the focus of one analyst’s for some time.
On The Ross Rucker Podcast, analyst Greg Cosell discussed his impressions on new Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler, describing him as “fascinating,” a “higher-level arm talent,” and a “effortless thrower.”
Cosell stated, “I don’t think he has a natural sense of timing and anticipation,” but he was undeniably a huge arm talent with a “compact, explosive delivery” when it came to throwing the football.
The Saints selected Rattler in the fifth round, giving him the chance to watch and learn from Derek Carr.
After an inconsistent and even turbulent collegiate career, Rattler will probably be able to develop for a few years with Nathan Peterman and Taysom Hill as his primary backups.
Rattler was the top quarterback prospect out of high school, according to Cosell, but he ended up moving from Oklahoma to South Carolina after No. 1 pick Caleb Williams took over as starting quarterback.
