The Washington Commanders had one of the weakest defences in the league in 2023, finishing 32nd in passing, 27th in running, 32nd in total yards, and 32nd in points.
During the previous season, one of their weaker defensive positions was linebacker. The Commanders signed two free agents that could start because they recognized how important it was to have dependable linebackers on the team.
A nine-time Pro Bowl LB was signed to a contract by the Washington Commanders.
Bobby Wagner signed a one-year, $6.5 million contract with the Commanders. With 1,706 tackles, 89 TFLs, 33 sacks, 13 interceptions, one pick-six, 68 pass deflections, six forced fumbles, nine Pro Bowls, and six All-Pros in 185 games, Wagner will be entering his 13th season in the NFL.
Another linebacker from the NFC South was signed by the Commanders.
An LB from the NFC South was signed by the Washington Commanders.
Frankie Luvu was also signed by the Commanders to a $31 million, three-year contract. In 88 games, Luvu has 338 tackles, 46 TFLs, 20 sacks, one interception, one pick-six, 12 pass deflections, and five forced fumbles. He will be entering his seventh season in the NFL. The past three seasons were spent by him with the Panthers.
The addition of Wagner and Luvu appears to be detrimental to their 25-year-old linebacker, whose fifth-year option is set to expire next week. The Commanders have made their decision.
The Washington Commanders have selected to exercise their first-round 2021 draft selection’s fifth-year option.
The $54.483 million fifth-year option for Jamin Davis for the 2025 campaign was rejected by the Commanders. It was an obvious choice to exercise his fifth-year option, which would have elevated him to the top of the position. After the 2024 season, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
Davis’s NFL career has started off disappointingly for him.
Jamin Davis’ NFL career hasn’t started off to a great start.
Davis was selected by the Washington Football Team with the 19th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. In 45 games and 36 starts, he has amassed 269 tackles, 20 TFLs, seven sacks, one interception, six pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.
Davis’s debut campaign was underwhelming. With 76 tackles, three TFLs, one sack, one pass deflection, and a 46.8 PFF grade, he participated in 16 games, starting eight of them.
Davis’s second season saw a minor improvement. With 104 tackles, nine TFLs, three sacks, one pass deflection, and a 62.9 PFF grade, he participated in 16 games, starting 15.
In his third season in the NFL, Davis enjoyed his best year to date. With 89 tackles, eight TFLs, three sacks, one interception, four pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and a 67.6 PFF grade, he participated in 13 games, starting 13. In Week 13, he sustained a shoulder injury that ended his season.
Jamin Davis will face significant challenges in 2024.
Given that Davis is about to approach a contract year and have an opportunity to establish his value in the NFL, 2024 will be a pivotal year for him. If he performs well, he might be able to sign a big deal and even start in 2025.
If he performs poorly, it appears doubtful that he will land a respectable contract; in 2025, he will either be a backup or a free agent.
Next season, how will Davis fare in Dan Quinn’s defence?
