The Buffalo Bills need to figure out a way to make it to the Super Bowl, and this season could be more important than any other in recent memory in 2024.
In order to defeat Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC, the Bills must rely on their best players to perform at the highest level of their craft. This is because the team is losing a number of important players, including Gabe Davis, Tre’Davious White, and Jordan Poyer.
Josh Allen spent his first six seasons as a player in Buffalo, where he was the starting wide receiver for the final four of those seasons under Stefon Diggs.
According to Pro Football Reference, Allen averaged 35 touchdowns (15 interceptions) and 4,518 passing yards per 17 games from 2020 to 2023. Additionally, he has completed 65.5% of his attempts for an average of 7.4 yards per throw.
Like many quarterbacks, Allen experienced a lot of growing pains during his first two years of play. However, it’s obvious that he made progress in his third season, and Diggs should be given some credit for it. Diggs finished that season with the most catches in the NFL—127—and the most yards—1,535—making him an All-Pro.
NFL MVP runner-up Allen, meanwhile, led Buffalo to an AFC Championship Game trip and threw for career-highs of 37 touchdowns and 4,544 yards.
From then on, they had a fantastic working relationship that helped the Bills win four straight AFC East championships. In each of his four seasons, Diggs has accumulated at least 103 receptions, 1,183 yards, and eight touchdowns.
For four years straight, Allen and Diggs put the team into the conversation for a Super Bowl contender, making them one of the top QB/WR duos in the NFL at their peak.
In the end, Diggs and Allen most likely improve each other, and the Bills have benefited from that.
It looks like this could be the Bills’ last chance to win a title with Josh Allen at the center, and one of the main reasons for this could be Stefon Diggs’ dissatisfaction. Buffalo’s winning streak in the AFC East may not persist.
Although Diggs and Allen have stated that their past disagreements are behind them, two instances in the past year have given supporters cause for doubt.
On social media, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon makes fun of quarterback Josh Allen, stoking rumors about a possible rift.
There have been many rumors since before the club’s training camp last year in preparation for the 2023 season regarding Diggs and Allen possibly having a serious problem that could hinder the squad.
Following Buffalo’s divisional round loss to the Bengals to end the 2022 season, the pressure on the Buffalo Bills increased, and with it went the rumors that Diggs and Allen were having problems.
During the defeat, cameras saw Diggs shouting at Allen as his quarterback did nothing in reaction. Earlier on in the game, Stefon Diggs gestured for Josh Allen to toss the ball higher. Soon after the game, Diggs would leave the stadium without warning.
Speaking to reporters, coach Sean McDermott downplayed the controversy, saying, “It hurts, and I wouldn’t want a guy that doesn’t hurt.”
When McDermott excused Diggs from the Buffalo Bills minicamp in June, the questions resurfaced. After saying he was “extremely concerned” about Diggs’ departure, McDermott gave the impression that the receiver had departed on his own. However, the coach later informed reporters that he had excused Diggs because both parties “needed a break.”
Diggs and Allen have both made the appropriate public statements, but Allen recently disclosed on “The Rich Eisen Show” that he had some disagreements with his top receiver.
Allen said, “There was,” in response to the question of whether he and Diggs had “a thing.” Allen maintains that the “thing” is now behind them, citing their “hug it out” following a communication breakdown early in the summer.
The Buffalo Bills are obviously only going to be as successful as Stefon Diggs and Josh Allen let them to be, but on Tuesday night, the standout wide receiver commented on a social media post that made a suggestion that his quarterback wouldn’t be as successful without him.
One fan said that Stefon Diggs wasn’t necessary for quarterback Josh Allen to succeed, and Stefon Diggs took offense at that.
To put things in perspective, ESPN commentator and former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III argued that Diggs was so essential to Allen’s success that they effectively extended the team’s window for a title.
That wasn’t the consensus, though, and Diggs addressed a user who had a different viewpoint.
