Following Aaron Donald’s retirement, the Los Angeles Rams and former Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White have reached an agreement on a one-year contract, according ESPN.
You never know who might suddenly enter the NFL Draft and cause a stir. The 2024 NFL Draft is sure to feature some surprise selections and deals, as it does every year. However, perhaps this year we know which team wants to make some changes.
With Sean McVay, Matthew Stafford, and recently retired (future Hall of Famer) Aaron Donald leading the way, the Los Angeles Rams are only a few years away from winning a Super Bowl. With the exception of a few essential players like Stafford and McVay, the current Los Angeles Rams are essentially unrecognizable from that Super Bowl squad, and it looks as though the team will soon place all of its chips on a young, rookie quarterback.
In recent years, Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead have toyed with the notion of bringing in a second young quarterback. They signed Baker Mayfield at the end of the 2022 campaign, and they were considering bringing him back. They targeted Georgia’s Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
What prospects might the NFL Draft in 2024 hold? On The Pat McAfee Show, Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report expressed his opinion that the Rams could be a sleeper team for Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
In all fairness, the Rams might not be Penix’s sleeper pick in the first round. Choosing Troy Fautanu at tackle and Penix at quarterback for the Washington Huskies would have been a perfect first round selection for McVay and Snead. However, the more talk there is about this QB class, the more likely it seems that teams looking to choose particular players will have to target them in the first round.
Recently, Daniel Jeremiah’s mock draft had Penix as the thirteenth overall selection. There might be two teams that consider him a potential first-round pick, if there is only one. It would make sense to select Penix in the first round if teams think highly of him and think he can develop into a QB1.
Even with Matthew Stafford on the team, the Los Angeles Rams are in a rare position to make a choice of this nature. Stafford has struggled with injuries since joining the Rams, and it looks like he is nearing the end of his NFL career.
In the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, this kind of selection would undoubtedly cause a stir. Teams all around the league would have to force other quarterbacks to move up the board as a result. If, as an example, you had anticipated having Penix accessible in round two and Spencer Rattler as a backup in round three, you may find it difficult to hold off on using Rattler until the third round.
The demand increases as the stock soars off the shelf.
One way or another, the 2024 NFL Draft will have a cascading effect at the quarterback position, but the Rams entering the race would make other clubs go crazy.
