After the 2023 season, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett was unsure about his future and if he would return to the NFL. Thankfully, the quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs has improved.
Bennett was a key target for head coach Sean McVay and general manager Les Snead last season. Bennett is the 128th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He did, however, put himself on the non-football illness list after quitting football for personal reasons after participating in the preseason.
NFL preseason numbers for Stetson Bennett: 36-of-62 (58.1%) passing yards, 5.6 yards per attempt, 1 passing touchdown, 3 interceptions, and 4 sacks
Bennett was out of the NFL for the whole of his first campaign. Regarding McVay’s schedule for a comeback, the team gave scant information in January, and it was unclear if the former fourth-round pick will play for the team this summer.
Will the Rams re-sign Stetson Bennett?
The general manager of the Rams told reporters during the NFL Owners Meetings that the quarterback, Bennett, has committed to the team “at this point,” and that the quarterback will likely return to the team to take part in offseason drills.
We’ve connected with Stetson via last year’s draft and his time in Atlanta, so I know Dave’s first priority was to rekindle their friendship. Dave Ragone, our new quarterback coach, is one of the people we’ve done this for. I’m aware that he’s working out in Dallas. I’m pretty sure this is the location where Stetson trained before coming out, but I know Dave has shown some footage of him working out there. It’s in Dallas. He, therefore, looks good. Thus, as of right now, our goal is to include him in our offseason training.
Bennett’s NFL comeback will still be difficult. Players like Calvin Ridley and Deshaun Watson have proven that taking a year off from football for non-injury-related reasons causes their transition phase to be slower. Bennett, though, appears to be in fine football shape because he has been working out with Patrick Mahomes’ trainer in Dallas throughout the offseason.
Bennett will be vying to be the Rams’ third-string quarterback in 2024, even if he is physically prepared for the team’s offseason camp in Los Angeles. Bennett will play third string since Los Angeles is committed to veteran Jimmy Garoppolo as its backup. Though it is more likely that he will remain on the roster given his draft status, not every NFL team will use a 53-man roster spot to sign a third quarterback. The good news is that Bennett is regaining his strength and is eager for a chance to show what he can do in the NFL.
