On Tuesday, the Phillies reduced the number of players on their spring training roster by assigning three players to minor-league camp and optioning four more to Triple A.
The optioned players were first baseman Darick Hall, infielder Rodolfo Castro, and pitchers Kolby Allard and Max Castillo.
Cody Roberts, the catcher, and pitchers Austin Brice and Ricardo Pinto were assigned to minor-league camp.
Castillo and Allard were contenders for a lengthy relief role in the Phillies’ pen. Rather, it looks like they’ll start the season as starters at Triple A, where they’ll be ready to go should the Phillies have a rotation injury.
With a $2 million one-year deal, Spencer Turnbull seems to be the front-runner for the lengthy relief/sixth starter position. Due to shoulder soreness, Dylan Covey hasn’t pitched much, while Nick Nelson has had trouble in camp.
With Bryce Harper starting at first base, Kyle Schwarber locked down as the designated hitter, and the sporadic necessity to utilize Harper, Nick Castellanos, or J.T. Realmuto as the DH, Hall would not have seen much playing time in the major leagues. Off the bench, Hall would have only been a left-handed batsman. He’ll start at Triple A, but if Harper or Schwarber is ever forced to miss time, he could be able to make a comeback and contribute.
It’s the last week of Grapefruit League action for the Phillies. Next Monday, March 25, is their final spring training game. Three days later, they host the Braves to begin the regular season.
