JUST IN: Patriots Are Now Headed Into Offseason With a Clear Plan to Improve Their Roster

The New England Patriots knew exactly what they wanted to do to strengthen their roster going into the summer. They can add great players, particularly on the attacking end, because they have a ton of cap space.

The Patriots have prioritized strengthening their offensive line since they have underwhelming playmakers. When they were granted free agency, they prioritized Calvin Ridley over all others. Sadly, Ridley and the Tennessee Titans reached an agreement on a $92 million, four-year contract that included a full guarantee of $50 million.

They’ll have to change course, but they’ve already begun. The Patriots have inquired about a possible trade with two AFC clubs, according to Chad Graff of the Athletic.

“A team source stated that the Patriots have called to inquire about trades with at least the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Chargers in the past two weeks,” Graff wrote. Although it doesn’t imply a deal is close, it does indicate the Pats are prepared to take that route.

Why New England called these two teams makes sense. Tee Higgins, a wide receiver for Cincinnati, reportedly asked to be traded since his contract negotiations were not going well. Meanwhile, Los Angeles has a lot of contract space available in 2024 for edge rushers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa, as well as wide receivers Mike Williams and Keenan Allen.

For the 2024 season, New England intended to test the waters with the possibility of bringing in a few seasoned difference-makers. They have the funds to pay these guys, and should the appropriate chance arise, they also have the draft capital to close a deal.

For better chances come 2024, they must perform exceptionally well in this offseason. The Patriots are +2000 underdogs to win the AFC East, per FanDuel Sportsbook. Go to FanDuel Sportsbook and get your sign-up bonus if you want to lock in these odds.
