JUST IN: AFC Rival Overtakes All-Pro Super Bowl Hero Kansas City Chiefs

One of the Kansas City Chiefs’ All-Pro players is expected to join a developing AFC team. For the three-peat, the Chiefs were able to hold onto a few key players, but salary cap issues will prevent other players from coming back in 2024.
Chris Jones was the Chiefs’ largest offseason acquisition. To remain in Kansas City, Jones agreed to a record-breaking contract as a defensive tackle. The Chiefs were unable to maintain Tommy Townsend due to the high cost of Jones’ contract and the contract of Patrick Mahomes.
Townsend is expected to sign a $6 million, two-year contract with the Houston Texans, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

For the 2022 campaign, Townsend was named to the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro team. In Kansas City, he will always be associated with a punt that San Francisco 49ers special teams player Darrell Luter botched during the Super Bowl in February. The Chiefs took their first lead of the game after a fumble in the late third quarter.
The Chiefs’ chances of winning three straight titles may be threatened by the excellent Texans squad that Townsend will now play for. In C.J. Stroud’s first season with the franchise, the Texans won a playoff game, and they should only become better in 2024.

Townsend was going to be cut by the Chiefs soon after the Super Bowl. They signed Matt Araiza, a former punter for the Buffalo Bills, in February.
