Saints blockbuster contract deal Renegotiating and why top tier players can’t be signed

The Saints intend to renegotiate Tyrann Mathieu’s deal in order to receive additional cap relief shortly.

With his current contract, Mathieu will cost a little over $12 million against the cap this season. This is in addition to the $27 million he signed in 2022 for a three-year agreement. Due to the three vacant years that become effective between 2025 and 2027, he is legally in the final year of his contract; nevertheless, a revised agreement would likely give the organization more cap relief and maybe spread out the financials.

With less than a week until the start of the new league year, the Saints are already just over $17 million over the salary cap. Though New Orleans will surely have money to spend in free agency and there are still plenty of restructuring prospects available, don’t anticipate them to target any of the elite players
