The Washington Commanders have several alternatives to improve the roster this offseason because they have the most cap space in the NFL. With the second overall choice in the draft, selecting a quarterback will be the top priority. It will be imperative that they surround whoever they choose with receivers, and a seasoned player like Mike Evans might be the ideal choice for them. Evans might be open to playing for a rival team, but if the Commanders can find a quarterback, they might improve sooner rather than later.
Spotrac projects that Evans will sign a $95,343,536 contract for four years. The Commanders wouldn’t have a problem paying that amount. Tony Catalina of Pro Football Network identified the Commanders as one of three possible destinations for Evans given his impending free agency.
It would not be as prefabricated as the last two locations, but the Washington Commanders have cash to spend and are guided by a new group of capable leaders who want to go in the right way.
“The Washington team has a history of spending a lot of money in free agency, so it might take that to entice Evans in this particular scenario. But there are far worse circumstances than the one in the nation’s capital, especially with the second overall pick in the draft, a ton of money to spend, and Dan Quinn now in charge.
Catalina makes a suggestion that the Commanders could have to overpay, but for a team that has had difficulty recently, that is the circumstance. A player of his calibre would be perfect if they were to overpay someone.
The Tampa Bay Bucs would like to sign Evans again.
Given that Evans has played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in every season of his career, it wouldn’t be shocking if they re-signed him. With over 1,000 yards per season, Evans has also outperformed almost all other wide receivers in football. Evans was the first player to have over 1,000 yards in ten straight seasons at the start of his career.
Regarding the contract negotiations between Evans and the Buccaneers, general manager Jason Licht provided an update.
“How recently did that occur? Another one said, “We’re getting closer,” which made me laugh. On that, we’re putting a lot of effort. Believe me when I say that we all want Mike on both ends.
Evans and the Buccaneers are still settling their differences, so the Washington Commanders may need to convince him to play in Washington. Their dismal marks on the NFLPA report card show how difficult it is to market.
What the Commanders Would Receive from Mike Evans
Evans is the kind of player the Washington Commanders need to help them expedite this reconstruction. Dan Quinn, the incoming head coach, and Evans, the anticipated rookie quarterback, would make life much simpler for everybody.
The Commanders should make it a goal to add veteran talent as the offseason approaches. A rookie quarterback needs all the assistance they can receive, and the Commanders must set up the quarterback they pick to succeed because they will be under tremendous pressure to be the starting quarterback for the team.
They’d get just that from Evans, who is considered as one of the best wide receivers in football.
